19bis Rue Léonard Jarraud
AN INSTALLATION OF 20 MINUTES FOR 4 VISITORS IN A REAL ABANDONED HOUSE OF A ABBEY
2005

19 bis Rue Léonard Jarraud

Just as in other house projects the spectator, accompanied by three other visitors, follows a set course through an abandoned house.

IIn the spring of 2005 we settled in the abbey of La Couronne: a monument ‘majeur’, near Angouleme. An impressive dominion, with long cloisters with fire sections, a cathedral ruin and a park with age-old trees. Somewhere up in the central building of this complex we find a beautiful abandoned house that no one has entered in over 20 years. This was the stage for the house project.

Mister Ballon, 86 years of age, lived for 30 years in this house 20 years earlier. His stories are partially used in the project. Also a short film was made, thanks to his kind cooperation.

REVIEWS
‘A ballet of drops on peeled of walls, funny lamps that turn on and of and lure the spectators into a game of light and shadow between the cobwebs, a sealing where feathers come down from… In this ‘play without any performers in an abandoned house’ fools you where you stand and it just keeps going. (…) A subtile and poetic scene by Judith Nab.’

‘An extraordinary trip through time.’

‘Every door opens a memory that is woken up from its sleep.’
Sud Ouest, 31-05-2005

Everything is made to dip us in the imagination of daily life, and to mirror our own lives to the life in this house. The music made by Jacob ter Veldhuis fulls you into this imaginary world, where electronic music is mixed with the voices of Gabin and Signoret, bird songs and domestic sounds. It is a unique presentation that will play over 1000 times (in view of the limited number of spectators). No actor will take you along; only your own imagination takes you through the eight rooms of the house. The visit ends in the garden that has also been redecorated by Espace. Here it is nice to loose yourself and parade.

MUSIC
Listen to the music of ‘19bis Rue Léonard Jarraud’ (composed by: Jacob ter Veldhuis):

MIRROR GARDEN
The enormous garden that surrounds the abbey was partially overgrown. Bas Buisink composed the quadraphonic music for this garden. Via small cleared out pathways you are invited to visit the garden. The installation in the garden consisted of a course composed of mirrors, a tree house, a swing and a steaming pond.
