They create visual theatre performances and installations using many forms of mixed media, such as moving objects, optical (and mental) illusions, film, video and light projections, voice-samples, objects, dance, and music. They work in site-specific venues to create, for example, the recent ‘plays without actors in abandoned houses’ or in conventional ‘black box’ theatres, starting from the potential of complete darkness. Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Judith Nab/Espace also perform regularly in France and other countries in Europe. ‘In my performances, as in reality, real images continually get mixed up and confused with intimate images coming from memories and imagination. Daily objects and events are isolated in the completely dark spaces in which the performances and installations take place, with the result of that the visitor’s disorientation only grows, literally as well as figuratively. In the house the inhabitants and habits changed, but each time in the limited space of each room they cooked their meal, took a shower, were together or alone in the bedroom. Living a life that could have been ours. I am more interested in what connects people than in what makes them different.’ - Judith Nab. |
